Conservative religious fundamentalists are furiously lobbying to prevent MalacaƱang from allowing the utilization of the funds for "artificial family planning" appropriated in the 2007 national government budget. Given the current critical political situation, it is unlikely that the present administration will risk the ire of the religious right that still has formidable influence among the Catholic bishops - even as the mid-December deadline for obligating appropriated funds is fast approaching
Meanwhile, even when local governments are committed to supporting reproductive health programs, the fundamentalists continue their rear-guard actions. In Quezon City, the efforts of the city council to support the mayor’s highly regarded population and development programs are being resisted by groups threatening the young councilors with political reprisals in the future.
